Call for Nominations

For the Board of Officers for the Beta Delta Chapter of Beta Phi Mu

As per Article X of the Beta Delta Chapter Bylaws, it is time to call for nominations for elected offices on the Chapter’s Board of Officers. Article X states:

Nominations for the officers and three directors shall be made by a committee appointed by the president. Additional nominations may be made from the floor prior to the election. One director shall be nominated and elected from among the newly inducted members at the time of election.

The Nominations Committee is presently composed of the current Board and all positions on the Board are up for election.  Those positions include: President, Vice-President/President-elect, Secretary/Treasurer and four Directors. If at all possible, at least one director should be nominated from the most recent 2 classes of inductees (2015 and 2016).

In view of the above, nominations will accepted until Fri., Sept. 22, 2017 at 5:00 PM Eastern  The names of the individuals nominated for office will then be distributed with any statements by the candidates via the Chapter’s listserv.  The election will take place, via online ballot, from Wed. Sept. 27, 2017 through Wed. Oct. 11, 2017 at 5:00pm. An email link to the electronic ballot will be provided. I am attaching a list of the position descriptions for your reference.

The Nominations Committee is looking for a few good officers to lead the Chapter and “set the bar high”. Therefore, please consider nominating yourself or someone else to run for one of our chapter offices.  Please ensure the person you are nominating WANTS to be nominated. 🙂

A brief bio should accompany the e-mail message containing the nomination.  If you would like to nominate yourself or someone else, please send an e-mail message with that information to by the Sept. 22nd  deadline.  If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Chapter Meeting

Monday, May 15, 2017 at 7:00 PM in Baldy Hall – Room 553 

The meeting will feature a presentation by Valerie Nesset, PhD on “Information Literacy Instruction: Things You Need to Know But Maybe Don’t Know to Ask”.

In the session, Dr. Nesset will offer insights into areas of information literacy instruction that may not be covered in LIS programs or ongoing professional development. Concepts related to information literacy such as indexing, classification, information behavior, user experience, and usability will be discussed.

Valerie Nesset, PhD is an Associate Professor, Associate Chair with the Department of Library and Information Studies at SUNY Buffalo.  She is the editor of the Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science (CJILS). Her research focuses on the intersection between information-seeking behavior and information literacy, specifically with elementary school students. In addition to several book chapters and conference papers, she has authored several articles that have appeared in journals such as Education Today, The Indexer, Information Research, Journal of the Association of Information Science and Technology (JASIST), Library and Information Science Research, and New Review of Children’s Literature and Librarianship.

Save the Date! Next Chapter Meeting: Information Literacy Instruction

Save the Date!  Next Chapter Meeting will be held Monday, May 15th at 7:00 PM in Baldy 553 featuring a presentation by Valerie Nesset, PhD., Associate Professor, Associate Chair, Department of Library and Information Studies, Graduate School of Education, State University of New York at Buffalo

​Dr. Nesset will be speaking on Information Literacy Instruction.  An effort will be made to stream the meeting for those members not located in the Western New York Area who would like to participate in the meeting and listen to Dr. Nesset's presentation.  More information to come in the near future.

Get ready to Participate in this Year’s Chapter Activities!

The Board is Planning an Active Year!

Your Beta Phi Mu Chapter Board recently held a very productive meeting to plan for conducting some interesting chapter programs this year.

Here are some of the highlights of this year’s planning meeting:

  • Chapter Involvement in the Bobinski Lecture Series Event – The Board decided to support the 2017 Bobinski Lecture Series Event being held Monday, March 27th at 7:00 PM on the North Campus of UB. The event will feature Dr. John Bertot discussing “Under Duress: The MLS and Libraries Today”. The chapter is lending support to help set up for the event, staff the registration desk and help clean up after the event. The really exciting possibility relating to this event for chapter members not located in the Western New York Area is that plans are underway to broadcast the presentation via “Facebook Live” so chapter members not located in WNY will be able to view the presentation! Check back on our website and/or on the Listserv to learn more about how members can watch the presentation from outside of WNY.


  • Three Programs Planned for This Year – The Board decided to try and hold three educational programs this year exclusively for chapter members. At this point, the programs are tentatively scheduled for late May, over the summer and in November. As we get more information about these events confirmed we’ll post that info on our website and on our Listserv.


  • A Twitter Site for the Chapter – One of our Board Members offered to establish a Twitter Site for our Chapter to allow chapter members to connect with each other with the chapter leadership and stay on top of chapter happenings. As soon as we have the twitter handle established we’ll post it on our website and via our Listserv.


  • A Presidential E-mail Message Just for Each Member – In the next week or so I will be sending a personal e-mail message to each chapter member highlighting our activities coming up this year and discussing how each chapter member can become more involved in the chapter’s operations to ensure the chapter will be a valuable resource to all members over the long term.


So, it looks like 2017 will be a great year to get involved with your Beta Phi Mu Chapter. We hope all members take advantage of this year’s chapter events.

You are able to renew your Beta Delta membership either online or via snail mail.  Dues are $15 for the year.  These dues help us to continue to promote and support scholarship in LIS by co-sponsoring lectures with UB’s LIS Program as well as holding events for Beta Delta members.

When serving as an adjunct professor teaching records management and archives courses at the SUNY Buffalo Department of Library and Information Studies, I’m often asked what skills employers are seeking in candidates for archives or records management positions.  The skills employers are looking for in archivists and records managers are most likely the same skills employers are looking for in any professional in the library field.

Active participation in our Beta Phi Mu Chapter gives chapter members the opportunity to gain additional skills or enhance existing skills which will end up making chapter members more competitive for positions in the library and information management field.

Here are some of the skills I’m talking about:

  • Possessing good communication skills both oral and written – Active chapter members get the chance to speak at various chapter functions and/or develop written documents. Both these activities will allow chapter members to not only enhance their communication skills but provide ways to illustrate to potential employers they possess those skills.
  • Leadership skills – By serving on the Chapter Board or taking the initiative by heading up a Chapter Committee chapter members can demonstrate to employers the leadership skills they possess which employers are always looking for in an employee.
  • The ability to be a team player – By serving on a Chapter Committee, Chapter members gain additional experience in collaborating with other professionals in a cooperative environment which will demonstrate to potential employers how easily you can work with others to achieve a common goal.

So, I hope you’ll start 2017 off right by getting involved in our Beta Phi Mu Chapter.  If you do you’ll not only be strengthen the chapter and making it more vibrant, you’ll be getting a unique opportunity to enhance your communication skills, your leadership skills and your team building skills making you a much sought-after professional for any position in the library and/or information management field.

Presidential News and Notes

Dear fellow chapter members!

As your chapter president, I am committing myself to give it 100%, as my fellow board members are, to encouraging greater participation by our chapter membership.  In keeping with this thought, my goal will be to post my thoughts on our website on a monthly basis regarding what is happening with the chapter and how you can become more involved with the chapter activities.   We can’t have a vibrant chapter without you!

I was thrilled a number of the previous board members were willing to once again serve on the chapter’s board.  That is quite a commitment by some of the most outstanding chapter members we have.  I was even more thrilled that Sara Brown stepped forward and became a new member of the board.  Thank you once again Sara Brown.  Next year, it will be imperative that more “Sara Browns” join the board if the chapter is to survive and excel.

On Thursday, February 9, 2017 at 6:30 PM in Baldy Hall, the newly elected board will be holding its annual long-range planning meeting to plan chapter events for the coming year.  Even though it is a board meeting, the meeting will be open to all chapter members so those members located in the Buffalo-Rochester Area can certainly attend it in person but just as importantly, those chapter members located outside the area can attend the meeting via Skype.  Just provide us with your Skype information and we’ll pull you into the meeting.

The board is tentatively thinking about planning at least two professional events during the coming year and since we will be holding these events via Skype and other telecommunication resources, everyone who is a member of the chapter will have the opportunity to take advantage of these events no matter where they are located.

In addition, over the next month, I’ll be sending an individual e-mail message to each chapter member encouraging them to become actively involved in our chapter activities.

Our Beta Phi Mu Chapter can’t become the great chapter it can be without the active participation of all members of the chapter.  Here are some ways each chapter member can help the Board make the chapter great:

  • Actively participate in our chapter’s planned educational events in person or by Skype.
  • Provide the board your ideas as to the types of events you would like to see held this coming year and your ideas about other activities you’d like to see the chapter carry out.
  • Think now about the possibility of serving on the chapter board when we hold elections again next fall.
  • Read and respond to the individual e-mail message I’ll be sending out to each chapter member asking for their suggestions and input on the chapter.
  • Promoting your membership in the chapter by citing your membership on your resume and talking about your chapter membership in your work environment among other ways.

Again, the board is willing to work very hard to make the chapter great but we really can’t do it alone.  We need all the members to get involved to the extent they can.  If you have any ideas on what you’d like to see the chapter do, how you’d like to get involved in the chapter activities or other thoughts about the chapter operations, please contact me at

News & Notes from the President

Dear Beta Phi Mu Beta Delta Chapter Members:

I thought I would share with you some brief thoughts on the chapter's annual meeting held Thursday, October 20th at 7:00 PM in Baldy Hall on the North Campus of SUNY Buffalo.  We now have the ability to conduct our annual meetings using Skype which means chapter members can participate in our meetings no matter where they are geographically located.  Two chapter members actually participated in our annual meeting this year by Skype.

First of all, I want to thank all of the board members who were elected to office on the chapter board for their willingness to serve on the board for the coming year.  A special thank you goes out to the veteran board members who have served on the board the last two years and have expressed their great support for the chapter by offering to serve a third year.  A special welcome goes out to our new board member, Sara Brown, who stepped forward this year to run for office and get elected.  Welcome Sara!  The board is committed to giving it 110% in energizing the chapter membership so more chapter members will step up and run for office next year so the chapter can maintain its sustainability.

I thought the annual meeting came off well.  We were pleased to have a few regular chapter members attend the meeting in person as well as two members via Skype.  Thanks to Board Member, Brenda Battleson White, we were able to record the meeting and thanks to Esther Jackson, we have posted the recording on our website.  So, if you didn't get a chance to participate in the meeting, you can still listen to the meeting by clicking on the link to the recording on our website.

The best part of the annual meeting was the suggestions we received by those in attendance about how we can get the chapter membership more motivated.  I'm sure we'll consider all those ideas at our long-range planning meeting.

As your Chapter President, I'm planning on giving it my all this coming year to get this chapter energized so it's sustainable in the future.  I didn't put in all the effort I did over the last two years only to see the chapter get dormant again.  I hope all chapter members can match my effort.  All the board members are with me on this effort.  But, in the final analysis, the chapter can't continue to operate without the active participation of more chapter members.  The current board can't be expected to serve on the board forever.  With the great events we hope to plan in the coming year, I'm cautiously optimistic we can get the chapter membership more energized by the end of our year.

In connection with the above, in the near future, I will be composing an e-mail message and sending it out directly to each chapter member promoting their active participation in the chapter in the coming year.

2016-2017 Executive Board

Congratulations to the 2016-2017 Beta Delta Executive Board!  Many of the board are returning for their third year.  The returning board is thrilled to welcome Sara Brown as a Director.

Sara is a 2015 graduate and recent BPM inductee now working as a librarian with the Baltimore County Public Library. There, she focuses on outreach and programming and is especially interested in public libraries as non-commercial community gathering spaces. She is enthusiastic about our chapter’s potential and would love to be a part of helping us serve our members and the profession!

For those who considered running in 2016 but demurred, please do consider a run again in 2017.  This organization is only viable so long as members take an active service interest.
